Wadding & Cumulus: discover the meaningful story of our cocoons

At Ouatine & Cumulus, every product tells a story, imbued with meaning, sewn with softness, care, and expertise. But where did this idea of a cocoon come from? Stéphanie, the brand's founder, a pediatric nurse, and a mother herself, will tell you about the origins of Ouatine & Cumulus. Because before becoming the companion for babies' sweet nights at home, the cocoon first saw the light of day in a very specific environment: neonatal care.

Discover the story of how our first cocoons were created and immerse yourself in the meaningful narrative of our cocoons.

Once upon a time, in a hospital, the creation of cocoons

Like many good ideas, the cocoon was born out of a need… and a desire to bring well-being to babies' daily lives. Ouatine & Cumulus founder, Stéphanie, has been working as a neonatal nurse for a long time. Throughout her career, she has supported many babies and their parents in their first days—fragile babies, born too early, or whose birth was more complicated.

It was during a NIDCAP training – a newborn behavioral observation program – that a fascinating world opened up to her: that of the subtle language of babies. Observing their gestures, their expressions, their reactions, understanding what they like, what soothes them, what bothers them. And above all, offering them individualized care, respectful of their development and rhythm. This deeply human approach was a revelation: every baby is unique and deserves to receive the care that suits them. This is especially true for premature babies who need more significant support for quality development.

As observations progressed, it became clear: babies' sleep is an essential element in their development, yet finding deep, restorative sleep is not easy. Often interrupted, due to an unstable and insecure position or a lack of reassuring physical landmarks, they needed to be offered a small cocoon, as soft as their mother's womb, to help them fall asleep.

A cocoon where every detail is designed for babies

Rapidly, the idea began to take shape in her mind, then in reality. Through sketches, tests, prototypes, and adjustments, a small nest designed for the real needs of newborns was created. Two years of work, in collaboration with pediatricians, physiotherapists, nurses, and also parents. Two years to refine every detail, every stitch, to create a cocoon validated by everyone... including the babies themselves!

The result? The cocoons, similar to small kangaroo pouches, are padded spaces that allow newborns to self-soothe by placing their hands close to their face, in a flexed position, which reminds them of the sensations known in their mother's womb. The space delimited by the cocoon around them allows them to maintain a slightly flexed position, an ideal position for their development, which helps them have peaceful and secure sleep. A real feeling of well-being, which helps them to feel reassured and secure.

The stimuli surrounding children after birth are numerous, and the cocoon quickly becomes an essential element in their daily lives to soothe them and improve their sleep. Babies find soft, reassuring support there, which helps them calm down, refocus, and sleep better. The cocoon then becomes a true sensory landmark, a bubble of comfort.

From the hospital cocoon to parents' living rooms

Very quickly, word of mouth spread: caregivers approved, parents thanked, babies slept better. And then, one question kept coming back: "Can we have one for home?"

The answer was a big "yes." It was unthinkable to keep this little treasure only within hospital walls, as it had been discovered that babies' sleep there was unstable and of better quality. So, it had to be offered to all newborns. This is how the size 1 cocoon was born, specially designed to accompany little ones from their first weeks at home. With its belt to keep the baby safe and its reversible hood for peaceful naps, it adopts the codes of the hospital cocoon while adapting them to family daily life.

Then, babies grow (too fast, let's be honest!), but not enough to already put them in a too-large sleeping bag. This is how the size 2 cocoon came into being, perfect for extending the cocoon sensation while adapting to rapidly evolving motor skills, up to 6 months, when their motor skills develop greatly. Finally, to accompany sweet nights for longer, the sleeping bag completed the collection. Because at Ouatine & Cumulus, we like to see babies sleep well... for a long time.
